San Martín de los Andes Fly Fishing Guide: Everything You Need to Know

San Martín de los Andes is the undisputed hub of fly fishing in Northern Patagonia. This small alpine town sits on the shore of Lago Lacar in the foothills of the Andes, surrounded by some of the most productive trout rivers in the world. For the full regional overview, see our complete guide to fly fishing in Northern Patagonia.

Why San Martín de los Andes?

Within a two-hour drive you have access to the Chimehuin, Malleo, Collon Curá, Aluminé, Meliquina, Hermoso, Quilquihue, and Caleufu rivers. The nearby Chapelco airport (SMQ) receives direct flights from Buenos Aires throughout the season.

Best Rivers Near San Martín de los Andes

The Malleo is widely considered one of the premier dry fly rivers in Patagonia — technical fishing with small mayflies, beetles, and ants. The Chimehuin is the most famous river in the region, ideal for float fishing and streamer fishing for big brown trout. The Collon Curá produces prolific trout populations and the famous willow worm hatch. The Quilquihue is just 12 km from town, ideal for beginners. The Meliquina and Hermoso are less pressured and more remote.

Getting There

Fly into Buenos Aires Ezeiza (EZE), then connect to Chapelco airport (SMQ) on a domestic flight. Transfer to San Martín de los Andes takes around 20 minutes. Book domestic flights well in advance during peak season.

When to Fish

The season runs from November 1 through May 31. December through March is peak season for dry fly fishing. The dragonfly hatch on Lago Lolog and Lago Tromen runs December through January.

Staying in Town vs. Lodge

Basing yourself in town gives you flexibility — hire independent guides for day trips, eat at local restaurants, and explore the surroundings. A comfortable double room in a good hosería runs USD 80 to USD 150 per night. For a full cost breakdown, see our cost guide. Travelling with someone who doesn’t fish? Licenses and Regulations

A Neuquén provincial fishing license is required for all public waters. Purchase online before you arrive or at local fly shops in town. All fishing in Neuquén province is catch and release for trout.
